Long Lasting Makeup

I mentioned on Thursday the importance of using makeup for longevity when working with brides and thought I would elaborate by sharing some tips on getting makeup to last.

Preparation is key
By prepping the skin correctly you can increase the life of your makeup application and keep your bride happy all day.

  • Give moisturiser time to be absorbed into the skin so you have a good canvas to work from and your makeup wont slide off.

  • Using a good primer will prep the skin for foundation and should increase the longevity of your makeup.

  • An eye primer will not only give your eyeshadow more staying power and stop creasing but the shadow should appear brighter and true to the colour in the pot as well.

Setting the makeup
Setting the makeup with a good translucent powder that doesn't change the texture or colour of your foundation is probably the most important step to extent the life of your makeup application.

When applying foundation and powder don't cake makeup on or think you need more coverage because the makeup has to last. A light application will last longer and look more fresh throughout the day. Using a powder puff with some loose translucent powder, press and roll the puff to set the makeup and reduce shine paying attention to the t-zone. Dust off any excess with a powder brush.

Long lasting lip colour
There are several techniques for getting the most out of your lip colour so here are a few you can try.

  • Use a clear lip liner to create a barrier to stop lip colour from bleeding.

  • Try filling in the lips with a matching lip pencil before applying lipstick to extend the wear.

  • Apply lipstick, blot and reapply to give the lip colour more staying power.

  • Use a lip stain to colour the lips and add a coat of lip gloss over the top to add shine.

Waterproofing
You don't want a teary moment to ruin the makeup for the rest of the day so make sure the products you use around the eyes are not going to budge with a few tears. Carry a good waterproof mascara and switch kohl pencil for gel, cream and waterproof liquid liners.

I hope you found these tips useful as they not only apply to bridal makeup but any makeup job that requires the makeup to last for long periods of time.

If you have any secrets for getting makeup to stay put share them with us in the comments section.

  1. You can always buy lip sealers for lipstick too - Benefit Shelaq (or something like that), FA makes one too. Also setting the face w/ a setting spray like Ben Nye Final Seal can do a good job too.

    FA's transforming gel is great for making any eyeshadow a great waterproof liner or eye colour. I know other makeup artists have used the gel to create waterproof cheek tints too.

  2. Thanks for the tips Jessica! You always have some cool advice to share :)

    I am a big fan of the transforming gels for liner but hadn't heard about using it for check tint, i need to experiment! :D

  3. Great tips (as always) :)

    @Alex
    Does the clear lip liner shine on camera (with it being waxy) or is it really matte?

    @Jessica
    When I was about 12 I had The Body Shop's lipstick sealer. I found it made my lips really dry and after a few hours would start to peel off taking the colour with it (it was probably my skin peeling off) and would leave big gaps in my goth-black lipstick. Do you know if the others have the same problems?

  4. Amy, the Urban Decay clear pencil I have linked to in the post is very matt.

  8. Liquidset by Ben Nye is great for waterproofing cake and cream liners. Use in place of water and you're all good to go. Can be purchased online, or at many theatrical makeup stores. Reasonable price of about $12 CAD for a small bottle.

  9. So many people underestimate the importance of a primer and setting spray!! The Ben Nye formula is good, but you can’t do a touch-up with liquid makeup over it after it dries. I prefer the Model in a Bottle – skin feels very natural after using it, and touch-ups are easier. The best primer I’ve found is called Mattify Loose Powder from Mattify Cosmetics. It’s great because it double tasks as a primer AND setting powder. Don’t know what I’d do without this stuff – I do stage makeup for a large high school for all of their events, and typically makeup slides right off all these oily skinned teens! I originally started using it for myself, because even though I’m 31 years old, my skin is still very oily. All the girls just love it, and wear it instead of makeup or along with their regular makeup, even when not on stage. I just bought a stronger powder from the company called Mattify Ultra that I’ve been testing on myself. It works even better! Normally, the oil would accumulate after 2 hours, now I can go 4 or 5 hours without blotting. Can’t wait to try this on the girls when school starts back up. I’m betting we’ll be in for many touch-up free performances!

  10. Thanks for all the feedback guys. I really dont like to reapply my makeup. At work we did a little project where some of us made videos on cosmetic related topics of our choice. I decided to actually test the products that claim to be long lasting or stay put products. check it out!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0CIvQajY8I
